One of Australia’s leading property analysts is heading to Toowoomba to discuss the city’s growing rental crisis with industry figureheads.

CoreLogic research director Tim Lawless will be the keynote speaker at a special breakfast event on Tuesday, hosted by the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s state branch.

It comes as Toowoomba’s vacancy rate sits at just 0.6 per cent, where it has roughly remained since June last year, with reports of dozens of potential renters applying for a single property.

Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio described the situation as a “crisis” at a recent council meeting.

UDIA Queensland CEO Kirsty Chessher-Brown said steady housing supply was a critical factor that influenced not only people’s ability to purchase a home affordably, but also the broader housing market including rental accommodation.

“Historically Toowoomba has been an affordable place for people to call home, but without a steady pipeline of housing supply we risk upward pressure on prices,” she said.

Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s Toowoomba chair Katie Knight will also speak at the event, which will be held at The Oaks Hotel from 6.45am.
