Toowoomba’s Newtown rugby league ground in Glenvale demolished ahead of major mixed-use development

A massive new mixed-use development will replace the old Newtown football ground, one of the most notable eyesores in Toowoomba. See the designs here:

One of Toowoomba’s final major eyesores has been pulled down ahead of a major $65m mixed-use development on the site.

The old Newtown Rugby League football clubhouse on Hursley Road, which had been left to decay, was demolished last week over several days.

It is the most significant work that has occurred on the site since plans were approved by the Toowoomba Regional Council in 2019 for a masterplanned precinct, including a service station, childcare centre, tavern, bottle shop and motel, along with other specialty stores.

The project is being spearheaded by Gold Coast-based company Gallagher Development Investment Group, which is owned by director Dean Gallagher.

“Glenvale Town Centre provides for the Glenvale community, retail, commercial, industry, community entertainment, recreational and residential uses to meet the needs of the rapidly growing area,” the company said on its website.

The precinct is based in five stages across six hectares.

Mr Gallagher bought the land from the Aspromourgos family in 2017 for more than $4m.

The company received a two-year extension for its operational works late last year, with its town planner Jess Garrett revealing the project was ready to be advanced to construction.

“Due to the unexpected regional property boom generated by the pandemic, the applicant has recently determined that the project is now financially viable and there is a demand for this type of land product in the locality,” she wrote in August.
