Toowoomba residents ask Bonza for Cairns route as thousands fly from Wellcamp Airport

Residents have had their say on which destination they’d like to travel to next on Bonza, and one city has been an overwhelming choice.

Toowoomba residents have expressed serious demand for low-cost flights to Cairns, as new budget carrier Bonza continues its routes from Wellcamp Airport to three destinations.

A Chronicle poll of more than 500 readers revealed the North Queensland city was the next preferred destination from Toowoomba, with 63 per cent voting for Cairns.

Mackay was the second-most popular (14 per cent), followed narrowly by Newcastle (14 per cent) and Tamworth (six per cent).

The poll included cities currently serviced by Bonza across its 25-route network that launched earlier this year.

The results come less than a month after the airline launched eight weekly flights from Toowoomba to Melbourne, Townsville and the Whitsundays in late April, with the city being serviced through Bonza’s Melbourne base.

Cairns is currently serviced with the company’s Sunshine Coast base, with other routes including to Rockhampton and Mackay.

Residents were enthusiastic about their desire to see low-cost flights to Cairns.

“Definitely Cairns from Toowoomba because it’s a great tourist destination in winter,” Kaye Black wrote on social media.

“Definitely Cairns — we travelled with them to and from Melbourne last week out of Wellcamp best airline, I have travelled with,” Lance Ferguson added.

“Toowoomba to Cairns would be huge, but it needs to be a consistent schedule,” Evan Scown noted.

In response to the poll, Bonza chief commercial officer Carly Povey said it would review its route map constantly.

“It’s exciting to see Toowoomba locals embracing Bonza through our flights to and from Melbourne, Townsville and the Whitsunday Coast,” she said.

“Our initial route map is only the beginning.

“We’re focusing on earning the right to grow and we’re always keen to hear what routes travellers are keen for in the future.”
