The Toowoomba Regional Council will know who its new chief executive is by Wednesday, with councillors having determined who will control the organisation’s operational arm.
More than 60 people applied for the chief executive’s role since December following the retirement of Brian Pidgeon after more than 13 years in the job.
The position is the only operational role appointed by the councillors themselves.
The council had a short-list of three as of last week following the “national and international search”, with mayor Geoff McDonald revealing that one person was the standout candidate.
“It’s down to one now,” he said.
“If you look at local government roles, the CEO is the highest position in a council and given our size, we’re in the top 5 per cent across Australia, so it’s a significant role and that’s why we’ve taken the time to make this choice.
“I’m pleased with the process councillors have undertaken and look forward to welcoming our region’s new organisational leader.”
It is believed the successful applicant will be available for comments following the meeting, which will take place at City Hall from 11am.
Former Brisbane City Council chief executive Colin Jensen has been the interim chief executive at the TRC since the start of the year.
The announcement comes just weeks after the council filled another vacant position in its executive leadership team, following the appointment of Cairns council bureaucrat Ed Johnson as general manager of planning and development.
Mr Johnson, who takes over from Dr Nikola Stepanov, will start in Toowoomba on June 30.
