Toowoomba industrial suburb of Torrington to be connected to city sewer system after council vote

The Toowoomba Regional Council will connect more than 140 properties in the industrial suburb of Torrington to the city’s sewer system, in what is being described as a boost for future development.
Councillors voted to approve the new sewerage program, which would be carried out over three stages at a cost of about $4.3 million.
According to strategic water planning and capital delivery manager Ray Stephenson, the connection of Torrington would deliver economic and environmental benefits.
“As part of a larger project that has considered proximity to existing sewers, known environmental issues, development possibility, business expansion potential and capacity of existing network to cater for the additional load, the Torrington area has been identified as a high priority as part of a much larger sewerage program,” he said.
“The area includes, but is not limited to Carrington Rd, Cumners Rd, the western side of Boundary St, Hillman St, Molloy St and Reilly St.
“It is important to sewer these areas where financially viable and practical to protect the environment, ensure public health and safety and allow for business growth.
“Further, the expansion of the sewerage network will stimulate growth for not only residential development, but most significantly for non-residential.”
Cr Carol Taylor argued there should be a cost attached to the connection for each property, saying having sewerage would improve the value of the land.
