Toowoomba council lists 53 properties set to be sold under auction due to unpaid rates, charges

An Oakey parcel of land with more than $170,000 in unpaid rates attached to it is among more than 50 properties across the Toowoomba region potentially heading to auction.

The Toowoomba Regional Council has released its annual list of properties with outstanding rates for three years or more.

The current list, which is correct as of the council’s committee meeting last week, includes 53 parcels with total unpaid rates or charges worth more than $877,000.

According to council’s rates and revenue principal Shayne Morris, a small amount of properties actually make it to auction as the notice is enough to encourage owners to pay their outstanding fees.

“The pursuit of the outstanding rates or charges within the legislative framework is a demonstration of responsible financial management and the promotion of equitable treatment of all ratepayers across the region,” his report said.

“The recovery of overdue rates or charges is a priority and there is evidence that council’s collection strategies are achieving the desired outcome.

“Using the sale of land process will assist council in maintaining a sound rate arrears result.”

Other properties listed are residential dwellings in Toowoomba, along with several in industrial estates.
