Nearly 20 properties from across the Toowoomba region could be auctioned off in a couple of months of unpaid rates stretching back three years.

The Toowoomba Regional Council has revealed 18 sites have yet to have their outstanding charges paid as of September 29, more than two months after it send out notices to sell in July.

The move, which is an attempt to urge landowners to pay their debts, has worked since the original list include more than 50 properties.

Finance and business strategy portfolio leader Councillor Kerry Shine said auctioning off properties to recover debts was a last resort and that landowners still had time to pay their rates.

“Council is proactive in attempts to contact residents and ratepayers with assistance and offers of support mechanisms where they find it difficult to meet their legal obligations regarding rates,” he said.

“On occasions, council might not succeed in its attempts to contact the relevant property owners, which then requires council to publish its intention to sell property in a newspaper that circulates across Queensland (The Courier Mail) and the gazette.

“There still is an opportunity for affected property owners to speak with council about available options to meet their current rates debt.

“Based on recent experience, council expects most property owners will pay their outstanding rates before the sale of land auction.”

Auction notices will be released on October 21 for a sale on November 18.
