Following on from its last hit musical production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre is calling for auditions for next year’s musical directed by New York-based, Australian creative David Wynen.
The musical Come From Away is based on the story of 38 flights stranded during 9/11, whose 7000 passengers was welcomed by a small Newfoundland community when the US airspace closed following the day’s events.
The hit musical is set to hit the stage between the 14-23 March, 2025 at The Empire and follow on the from the success of 2024 production Cinderella.
Come From Away will be another opportunity unite the Toowoomba’s community through creative collaboration, general manager Giuliana Bonel said.
The 2024 production of Cinderella brought more than 6500 audience members, built 27 local businesses, and brought more than $350,000 into the local economy.
“In the lead-up to Cinderella, I was in awe of how the local community came together to support the arts, creating an incredible event on and off stage,” Ms Bonel said.
The Empire’s stage was turned into a magical wonderland with the help of 85 arts workers, 25 local performers (professional and amateur), 13 local musicians and eight backstage singers.
It comes with an ongoing legacy of Toowoomba’s beloved Empire Theatre both building opportunities for aspiring performers, with local, community productions of upcoming shows like Starcrossed (October 18-19) and Little Shop of Horrors (October 24), but also drawing internationally acclaimed productions from around the world.
Cast applications are now open, with auditions set for late November.
