Tambo Teddies launch bid to become ‘official gift’ of 2032 Olympic Games
An iconic western Queensland teddy maker that has gifted bears to royalty now has its sights set on representing Australia at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
An iconic western Queensland toy manufacturer that makes its beautiful teddies in Toowoomba has set its sights on becoming the official gift of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.
Tambo Teddies, which has sold more than 77,000 stuffed bears and other animals since opening in the small town in 1992, has launched an ambitious campaign to play a major role when the world arrives in Brisbane in seven years’ time.
The company, which opened a regional sewing hub in Toowoomba in 2019, plans to attend the official Brisbane 2032 procurement launch next week and put Bunji the Koala forward as the “gift of choice” for the games.
Co-owners Alison Shaw and Tammy Johnson, who took over the business in 2014, said Tambo Teddies already had a reputation for being an “Australian Ambassador”.
The bears have been given to royals like Prince William and Princess Kate, dignitaries and celebrities from across the world over the years.
“Every Tambo Teddy and Aussie animal we create carries the story of Australia’s wool industry, rural resilience, and community spirit,” Ms Shaw said.
“Our vision for 2032 is to be able to share those values with athletes, officials, and visitors as a truly authentic Australian gift.”
Ms Johnson said she believed Tambo Teddies captured the “spirit of this country”.
“Brisbane 2032 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase Australia to the world,” she said.
“We believe our teddies and Aussie animals capture the spirit of this country, natural, sustainable, and full of heart.”
The company’s official proposal document pointed out the koala was already the official emblem of Queensland and showcased both the state’s wool industry and local manufacturing.
“Choosing Tambo Teddies ensures the economic benefits of the games are spread across the entire state, rather than being concentrated in the southeast corner,” the proposal said.
“(It) highlights Queensland’s commitment to sustainable, ethical, and locally made products, aligning with global expectations for major sporting events (and) ensures each athlete and dignitary takes home a meaningful, long-lasting memento that tells the story of Queensland’s craftsmanship and rural industries.”
