Body found in car swept away by floodwater

A body has been tragically located in a vehicle that was swept away by floodwater on Wednesday morning.

A 73-year-old man has been tragically killed in floodwaters west of Toowoomba, after the vehicle he was travelling in was swept from the road into a fast-moving creek.

About 8.20am, police and emergency services received a report of two utility vehicles that were both swepped into a creek from Kelvinhaugh Yalangur Road.

The driver and sole occupant of one of the vehicles self extracted and is safe and well while the other older Roma man and his car remained missing for several hours.

Emergency services spent several hours trying to locate and get to the vehicle.

Police divers from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast were called to help try and reach the vehicle.

Their task was made difficult due to the high water level of the creek.

Just after 3pm the Roma man was located deceased in his vehicle.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service confirmed the matter was now with police.

A tow truck was called to the scene to collect the vehicle, which ended up 80m downstream from where it had first entered floodwaters.

One car and its occupants were accounted for, with crews now patrolling up and down Oakey Creek to find the second car.

It comes after crews rescued a person from floodwater at Grantham in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Crews also performed two rescues in the Southern Downs town of Inglewood, where about 800 residents were evacuated due to rising flood waters.

Hundreds of roads are closed across Darling Downs council areas, including Toowoomba, Southern Downs, Goondiwindi and the Western Downs.

Flood warnings remain in place for catchments across the region, including the Dumaresq River, Condamine River, Myall Creek and the Moonie River.

The rain is expected to ease off throughout Wednesday, and is expected to return across the weekend.
