Police have arrested someone in relation to a shooting that killed a young woman in Toowoomba’s northern suburbs on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident was reported to emergency services on Christmas Street in North Toowoomba just before 2pm, with up to 15 police units and ambulances swarming the scene within minutes.
A woman in her 20s who was seriously injured in the shooting has died in hospital, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
A middle-aged man also suffered serious injuries, while another was treated for emotional distress.
One neighbour said she heard a gunshot and ran out onto West Street, where she saw a woman laying on the ground injured.
The shooting occurred just a short distance from the Holy Name Catholic Primary School.
“It is extremely concerning,” Darling Downs Acting-Detective Inspector Brian Collins said.
“We are talking about in the early afternoon around pick up time, the police response will be swift to ascertain what happened here this afternoon.”
Police have detained three people who are assisting with their inquires.
A/Insp Collins described the incident as “alarming”, urging anyone with information or dash cam footage to come forward.
“Investigations are really in its infancy at the moment, so we’re calling for any witnesses that possibly might have been in the West Street/Christmas Street area between 1.30pm and 2pm, to come forward with any dash footage or any eyewitness accounts,” he said.
“Our thoughts go out to the family – it’s devastating for a person to lose their life in such a way.
“There is no concern with public safety at this point in time, we believe that no members of the public are in any current danger.”
The Polair helicopter has been circling the suburb continuously to aid police in the search, with officers canvassing every house along West Street in their pursuit of the offender.
Police were initially searching for a vehicle of interest but it has since been located and discounted as irrelevant.
A/Insp Collins said police are not treating the matter as a domestic violence incident.
There are unconfirmed reports that the woman was shot multiple times with a .22 rifle, but A/Insp Collins declined to comment on the weapon involved.
“Our thoughts go out to the family, it is devastating that a person lost their life in such a way that is why we will be doing our best to ascertain what has occured this afternoon,” he said.
