Sober experience for six spending Christmas weekend in the watch house

Forget prawns, Moreton Bay bug and turkey, six people are at the mercy of watch house staff as to what their Christmas Day lunch will look like.

At least six men will remain “guests” of the Toowoomba watch house this Christmas weekend until the Magistrates Court can hear bail applications on Monday.

Six men have forfeited their traditional Christmas Day feast and will have to put up with whatever Toowoomba watch house staff can find for their festive feed.

The “Christmas Six” were picked up by police on Christmas Eve for various indiscretions ranging from return to prison warrants to relatively serious offences.

Through The Chronicle earlier this week, Toowoomba police warned that anyone arrested in the lead up to Christmas risked being held in custody for the weekend because the Toowoomba Magistrates Court, which hears bail applications ordinarily on a Saturday morning, would not be sitting over the Christmas weekend and those in the watch house would have to wait until Monday to apply for bail.

With most takeaway eateries closed in Toowoomba for the Christmas Day holiday, watch house staff were not sure what the six “guests” would be munching on for their lunch and dinner.

Certainly prawns, Moreton Bay bug and turkey would not be on the menu as neither would any drink stronger than water.

“We’re not sure yet what they will be served,” a watch house spokeswoman told The Chronicle early Saturday morning.

“Last year we gave them pavlova and they complained so we won’t be providing that this year.

“It might be whatever we can find.”

Ordinarily, watch house inmates are given a serve of Red Rooster.
