Police investigate shooting death of Kara Weribone

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward as they continue to investigate a shooting in North Toowoomba.

The search for Kara Weribone’s killer stretched into its third day as police continued their investigations.

The 27-year-old mother of three died after she was shot in Christmas Street, North Toowoomba on February 26.

Neighbours recalled hearing a single gunshot followed by screaming, and the sight of a Toyota Camry fleeing the scene.

This vehicle was located a short time later in the Gladstone Street, about a kilometre west of the shooting.

As of midday on Friday police were yet to charge anyone over the shooting but are speaking with several of Ms Weribone’s associates.

The incident is the second tragedy to strike Ms Weribone’s family after her brother Nicholas passed away in November last year.

Mr Weribone suffered a critical head injury during an assault in Wine Drive, in Wilsonton Heights on May 9, 2022.

Tributes have flooded social media in the wake of Ms Weribone’s death.

“Such a beautiful young mother stolen from her children and family,” Suzanne Duffy said

“Why did this happen to such a gorgeous, sweet Mum?”

“Thank you for being Aunty Kara,” Kyeisha Dicko said.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Darling Downs Acting-Detective Inspector Brian Collins said police were working to identify and locate the shooter.

“At this point in time investigations are still in the early stages and we are looking for witnesses from the community that may have been in and around the West Street, Christmas Street area yesterday afternoon between 1.30pm and 2pm,” he said.

“Further to that, we’re also looking for witnesses specifically in relation to those who may have seen a white Toyota Camry sedan in the area at that time and also may have seen that vehicle in and around the Gladstone Street area, specifically around 12 Gladstone Street in that area on the afternoon between 2pm and 3pm.”

The shooter and the weapon remain unaccounted for.
