An Oakey man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after investigations into the serious injury of two police officers at Meringandan on Wednesday.

Bartholomew Peter Dornbusch was not required to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday when his matters were mentioned briefly.

His solicitor Ryan McCullough of MacDonald Law, told the court there would be no application for bail at this stage and asked the court to order a full brief of evidence.

Acting Magistrate Andy Cridland therefore remanded Dornbusch in custody and adjourned the matters for a committal mention back in the same court on July 13.

Police claim that at 1.20pm on May 24, police will allege they identified a Hino truck which had been stolen along with a Hilux ute about 4am on May 24.

Police will further allege as they opened the door to the truck the driver accelerated, trapping the officers between the truck and police car before they were thrown across the bonnet and onto the road.

Detective Senior Constable Steven Ingerson, 54, was flown to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital for treatment to serious injuries and is listed as stable.

Detective Senior Constable Mark Penberthy, 56, was taken to Saint Vincent’s Hospital for treatment to serious injuries and is listed as stable.

Both officers are recovering in hospital.

Darling Downs Superintendent Doug McDonald said Senior Constable Penberthy was released from hospital late Wednesday night and was in the care of his family.

“I went to see Senior Constable Penberthy, he was mostly concerned about his colleague’s welfare,” he said.

“Senior Constable Ingerson is still at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, he has family by his side down there. He is undergoing further treatment.

“I am pleased to say he is out of an induced coma, he is in good spirits but in a lot of pain and we hope for a speedy recovery for both officers.

“The level of violence people will go to steal vehicles is also a concern but it is not something unique to Toowoomba.”

It will be alleged the truck had driven away but was soon followed by two marked police vehicles to a Goombungee waste management plant.

It will be further alleged then the truck deliberately rammed the two vehicles causing extensive damage to them.

Two officers were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The 45-year-old man has been charged with two counts each of attempted murder and unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of endangering the safety of a person in a vehicle with intent, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, break and enter, wilful damage, evade police and possess dangerous drugs.

He will appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Earlier in the day at 10.30am, police intercepted the stolen ute with the use of a tyre deflation device on Omara Rd at Charlton.

Two men, aged 19 and 28, were taken into custody at the scene.

They have been charged with various offences including stealing, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle and drug offences.

Their matters were mentioned briefly in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Lawyers for Brock Aiden Brock Dornbusch, 19, and Michael Stephen Patch-Metzroth did not apply for bail and their matters were adjourned until June 22 for mention.

At about 4am on Wednesday a group of people cut the back fence of the TyreRight depot in Oakey and gained access to two vehicles, a HiLux and a Hino Series 300 truck.

GATE DESTROYED AS THEY RAMMED THEIR WAY OUT

Police allege the group destroyed a gate as they rammed their way out of the property in those vehicles.

The HiLux was observed north of Toowoomba a few hours later and was tracked to Charlton where police deployed a stinger trap and deflated its tyres.

At about 1.30pm police tracked the Hino truck to Meringandan and found it parked in front of a service station.

Two officers exited their vehicle and attempted to remove the 45-year-old man from the cab when he is alleged to have accelerated and struck the officers, before then crashing into the front passengers-side of the police vehicle.

The 54-year-old male officer suffered multiple broken bones and internal bleeding and was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

His condition was listed as serious but stable.

A 56-year-old male officer was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in Toowoomba with suspected shoulder and pelvic injuries.

Meanwhile, nearby police pursued the truck to the Goombungee rubbish bump where it rammed more police vehicles and two officers suffered minor injuries from airbag deployments.

The 45-year-old man was arrested at this second scene.

It is understood the 19-year-old man is the son of the 45-year-old man.

As of 6pm on Wednesday, Toowoomba police have charged the 19-year-old with 21 offences, including two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, four counts of stealing and one count each of evading police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possessing dangerous drugs, wilful damage and entering a premises to commit indictable offence by break.

The 28-year-old is charged with two counts of attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of stealing, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possess dangerous drugs and possess drug utensils.

Both men have been remanded in custody to face the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday.
