A near-record crowd has packed out a small community east of Toowoomba to celebrate all things spicy and hot at the Murphys Creek Chilli Festival.
The popular event on Sunday attracted thousands from across Queensland, with organisers witnessing travellers from Brisbane and the Scenic Rim.
Along with dozens of stalls selling sizzling sauces and spicy products, the festival also hosted incendiary eating challenges.
Event MC and co-organiser Madison Hebbard said all profits would go to Rural Aid, which supports regional communities during natural disasters and times of crisis.
“We’ve had a lot of people coming because they said they wanted to support Rural Aid,” she said.
“We honestly don’t know how many so far because it’s so busy.
“We’ve been working for weeks to promote it and everyone has been surprised by the crowds.
“I think pre-Covid we would’ve been in excess of 2000, there might well be 3000 by the end of the day.”
Ms Hebbard said the festival was also a great way for people to have a little fun after an already tough year for southeast Queensland.
“Now is the time to bring out your smiles, it’s time to start smiling and laughing again,” she said.
