Toowoomba paramedics, firefighters, police and emergency medical staff have let their hair down and enjoyed a drink at the annual race day raising funds for an important cause.
More than 150 people were at the third emergency services race day at Clifford Park on Saturday, which helps hardworking first-responders unwind from the job.
Co-organiser Leah Thompson said the concept was devised during the Covid-19 pandemic, reflecting the stresses and pressure the sector was under.
“I‘m an emergency nurse, and I’m married to a police officer (Senior Sergeant Stephen Thompson) and during Covid we talked all the time about when all of this is finished, we’re going to do something, so it was born during that time,” she said.
“We thought we’d put together some multi-service events to get together away from work.
“It’s a wonderful time to chat, and we rarely talk about work — when everybody is together, it’s a chance to get to know each other.”
Ms Thompson said funds raised from the race day would go towards improving shared facilities at the Toowoomba Hospital’s emergency department.
“Funds raised in our combined services events go towards added extras for the emergency department,” she said.
“A couple of years ago we bought some coffee machines (that) the QAS and QPS can use and we’ve got some artwork that will be going on the walls too.”
The group is also planning another family fun day later in the year, scheduled for the last Sunday in November.
