A legend of the Warwick rugby league community has been remembered after he was killed while riding an e-scooter on a suburban street.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

Toowoomba’s rugby league community is mourning the loss of one of its loveable characters with the tragic death of Warwick Cowboys inaugural player Peter Roser.

Mr Roser, 61, died after the e-scooter he was riding and a Holden Commodore sedan collided on Richmond Drive near the Wilsonton Shopping Centre about 11am on Tuesday.

Mr Roser was declared dead at the scene.

Mr Roser was well-known during his playing days with the Collegians rugby league club in Warwick in the 1980s and was a member of Warwick Cowboys which formed to enter into the Toowoomba Rugby League competition in 1986.

His former coach and teammate Bob Bennett remembered the likeable larrikin as a tough and hardworking forward.

“Pete was known as ‘Tractor’ because he was slow but never stopped and he plough through the line,” Mr Bennett said.

“He would never have made a winger but out there on the field he would take the ball up all day.

“When the going got tough, Pete would always yell ‘my ball’ and take it up time and time again.”

Mr Bennett and Mr Roser played the 1984/85 rugby league season in France with the First Division club Salon-de Provence.

“French football could be pretty violent at times and some of us would give it back but Pete never lost his cool,” Mr Bennett said.

“I remember one time they split his head open and we had to put on this sort of bandage on his head.

“They (the other team) ripped that off in the first five minutes but Pete just kept playing on and never retaliated.”

Away from the field, Mr Roser was known for his sense of humour and enjoying a laugh.

“He loved a drink and a laugh,” Mr Bennett said.

“I’m a teetotaller so we’d go out in France for dinner and I’d drink Coke and he’d drink the wine put on the table.

“He wasn’t the flashiest dresser but he enjoyed himself.

“He was one of the nicest blokes around, Pete was one of those blokes that you just couldn’t help but like.”

Mr Roser was married with two children.

The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit was investigating the cause of the crash.
