A major highway corner in the south of Toowoomba could be seeing a transformation after plans were lodged which include an iconic well-visited plaza to be upgraded to the Garden City’s newest shopping centre.
Applicants McConaghy Projects submitted a proposal to Toowoomba Regional Council on Thursday for an extension to the existing Kmart Toowoomba Plaza on the corner of Ruthven and Stenner streets in Kearneys Springs, turning it into a shopping centre with a floor size of 26,013m2.
The development application shows three new retail buildings in place of the parking lot, and an empty square of land, at the back of the existing shopping centre.
The plan includes the expansion of Coles with a new Click and Collect area.
The proposal includes a new liquor store, speciality stores, kiosks, offices and a large format retail space.
It has plans to add a total of 794 car parks, up from the existing 558.
A new fast food outlet and drive through are included in the proposal, and are mapped out near the current entrance to the plaza along Stenner St.
No changes have been proposed to the Ruthven St entrance, and the existing shopping centre would be reconfigured, according to the lodged plans.
Located in Kearneys Spring, the shopping centre services many residents on the southern suburbs of Toowoomba.
The area has numerous shopping centres, supermarkets and fast food outlets, like Pizza Hut and KFC on the other side of Ruthven St and Woolworths and Aldi further east along Stenner St.
Kearneys Spring is one of the fastest growing suburbs in Toowoomba and boasts a range of working professionals, students and new migrants.
It is also the entrance to Toowoomba from southern Queensland along the New England Highway.
Established in 1969, McConaghy Properties, a Brisbane-based specialist retail service company, currently manages $600 million assets including the Toowoomba Plaza and the Kingaroy Shopping Mall.
The developers have been contacted for comment.
