Man refused bail on ‘significant’ domestic violence charges

A 25-year-old man is accused of punching, kicking and choking his partner as well as deliberately driving his car at her.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

A 25-year-old man on serious domestic violence charges has been refused bail and remanded in custody.

Police accuse the 41-year-old, who is not named so as to protect the identity of the woman involved, of multiple assaults on the woman and holding a knife to her throat while making threats.

Objecting to the man’s application for bail, police prosecutor Rohan Brewster-Webb told Toowoomba Magistrates Court that it was alleged the man had punched, kicked and choked the woman on a number of occasions and once kneed her to the head.

Police claimed the man had also struck his partner in the head with a chopping board.

He was also charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle arising from police allegations that he drove directly at the woman who had to jump clear to avoid being struck by the vehicle, he said.

Mr Brewster-Webb said the man was on bail for previous domestic violence offences when he allegedly committed these latest assaults on the woman.

The man’s solicitor Michael McElhinney told the court his client would reside with his mother if granted bail and that he instructed he didn’t want anything to do with the woman so he wouldn’t go near her.

However, Magistrate Kay Phillipson said the allegations were “concerning” and that offending appeared to be “ongoing and significant abuse” and refused the man bail.

He was remanded in custody with the case adjourned for mention back in the same court with other similar charges on October 19.
