Leading sports simulator X-Golf to open in Toowoomba CBD

Planning your work Christmas party? The bar will house six golf simulators, giving punters are chance to play a round of 18 holes on any course in the world.

An old Toowoomba CBD gym site will be transformed into a state-of-the-art golf simulator, catering to both seasoned pros and casual players.

Construction is under way to convert the former site of the Cave Gym in Victoria Street into a X-Golf sports bar and simulator franchise.

Along with six virtual bays that can host up to six players each, the new venue will have a full bar and food offering to host parties and functions.

X-Golf’s indoor golf simulators offer punters the chance to play a round on thousands of courses from around the world.

Players tee off from a static location and a network of cameras, infra-red lasers, impacts sensors and advanced gaming software tracks their ball’s movement around the course.

The project is driven by Justin Garvie, a Roma-based businessman who owns several Snap Fitness gyms with his wife Wendy.

Mr Garvie said the venue would add another dimension to the city’s weekend attractions and introduce the sport to new people.

“It’s virtual golf with a difference — it’s got a fun side but also a serious side,” he said.

“People can come and have a lot of fun and play a round of golf (but) we’ll also be running competitions and it will have its own league, no different to any other sport.

“The winners of those can represent X-Golf Toowoomba and play winners in other locations.

“It also gives people a taste of golf that might not have played before, opening those novice players to the sport.”

Mr Garvie said he wanted the venue to complement Toowoomba’s existing clubs and golfing community.

“The other side is we’ll have pros working out of there and we’re quite keen to work with the golf clubs to help people play more of it,” he said.

“I see a fit for us to be working together — if they go to the courses in Toowoomba, they can bring their clubs in here.

“We’ll be looking at all the different angles of the business.”

Mr Garvie said the franchise, which will employ about half a dozen people, should be open before Christmas.

“We’re aiming to be open in that first week of December,” he said.

X-Golf will join the Toowoomba Chronicle and the Toowoomba Gallery in the recently redeveloped Rowes precinct.

The franchise started in Korea and has spread across the world with bars in Asia, North America and Europe.

The Toowoomba site will be its 15th Australian location.
