Kyaharlem Hazard accused of manslaughter of Heidi Riding has charges mentioned in Toowoomba court

Outstanding police material was blamed for delaying the case of a Toowoomba teenage driver charged with manslaughter arising from a fatal car crash.

Kyaharlem Hazard, 19, is charged with manslaughter, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and disqualified driving arising from a car crash on Hursley Road, Newtown, which killed 18-year-old passenger Heidi Riding.

Police allege Mr Hazard was behind the wheel of an allegedly stolen Holden Commodore sedan when he lost control of the car which crashed into a tree shortly after midnight on Friday, July 14.

Mr Hazard sustained relatively minor injuries while Ms Riding was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.

Her death sent shockwaves through the community with her sister alleging her family had been pushing for her to relocate to Tasmania after she was released from detention just a week before the crash.

The family wanted Ms Riding to move away after suffering trauma due to the loss of her partner Jemmah Cole-Crighton who died from injuries sustained in a similar type of crash in January.

Like Ms Riding, Ms Cole-Crighton was a passenger in an allegedly stolen vehicle that crashed at speed on the Warrego Highway just east of Toowoomba.

Mr Hazard has been remanded in custody and was not required to be in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday when his charges were mentioned.

Solicitor Alysha Jacobsen, acting as town agent for Mr Hazard’s lawyers of Skuse Graham Lawyers, told the court she had been instructed that a partial brief of evidence was available but that a list of other material was still outstanding.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Kinsley Weir said there were a number of statements outstanding and asked for an adjournment so the officer responsible could be chased up and the material made available.

Magistrate Clare Kelly therefore remanded Mr Hazard in custody and adjourned the case for mention back in the same court on November 2.
