The intimate, cosy and stylish property of Boho Cartel, only a few hours drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, may just be one of the best glamping sites in the Darling Downs.
It all started when pop-up picnic caterer Suzannah Miller took a pandemic-inspired camping trip in her Sydney backyard.
“I pitched the tent in the garden because we couldn’t go anywhere, styled the tent then did a picnic outside of it,” Ms Miller said.
“Then I put it on Instagram and Facebook and it just blew up.”
Wanting to lose the travel in her picnic business and add the glamp, she and her partner opted for a treechange, sold her Bondi apartment, bought the 30ha Pechey property “unseen” and moved to Queensland a few months later.
Set with eastern views looking out towards Cressbrook Dam and Lake Perseverance, Boho Cartel has turned boutique glamping up a notch, with a luxe swimming pool, refurbished dining and kitchen areas, and fire circle that is perfect for intimate family or friend gatherings.
“The first thing we did was put the pool in which became the centrepiece of everything,” Ms Miller said.
Growing up in The Lakes District in the United Kingdom and then relocating to Bondi in Australia, Ms Miller wanted to be close to water, and designed the pool with scattered tree shade to overlook the expansive views towards Cressbrook Dam.
Within the next couple of years, landscaping and six teepees appeared, the horse stable was refurbished into a dining and lounge room with a wood-fired pizza, a bar and a kitchenette, and finally she opened to guests in October 2023.
“I wanted people to feel like they just arrived somewhere really magical and really close to nature,” Ms Miller said.
Overlooking the pool and the view, a barbecue and a smoker sit in a small shed, meaning lunches and food can be catered and cooked poolside.
The site accommodates up to 20 people, and is designed with friends or family groups in mind, such as hens’ parties, birthday parties, or wellness retreats.
The space oozes rustic, preloved luxury, with locally sourced antique items, such as a ladder becoming a light trestle or part of the bar, old horseshoes making the fire pit and repurposed cable drums as tables.
The tents were waterproof Breathe Bell Tents which had stood up against some wild weather, Ms Miller said.
They also opted for a modern bathroom block, yet cast details of decor which seamlessly move between the natural environment and the glamping accommodation.
With a few packages available which include accommodation, some meals and catered picnics, Ms Miller also offers a concierge service and picks up any online grocery and alcohol orders for guests.
“We just want people to turn up and relax and it takes the stress away, as well as making it a little bit more special for them,” she said.
