Little did he know when he did the burnout on James St that a police patrol had pulled in behind him.

A 32-YEAR-OLD man who told a Toowoomba court he had “swapped drugs for alcohol” after being convicted of drug-driving has now been caught drink-driving.

Brodie Joshua Pobar had attracted the attention of a police patrol on James St on June 12 when he was heard to rev his engine while stopped at a red traffic light at the Kitchener St intersection.

As police officers watched from their car behind, Pobar was seen to do a burnout, causing a large plume of smoke to arise and envelope the cars around his, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

Police captured the incident on dashcam and approached the 32-year-old in his car.

Pobar told the officers he had dropped the clutch and put his foot on the brake to drop a burnout and didn’t see any issue with that, the court heard.

Asked if he had been drinking, the truck driver said he’d had a “couple of wines” and a police roadside breath test returned a breath/alcohol reading of 0.087.

Because of the burnout, Pobar’s car was impounded for 90 days, the court heard.

He pleaded guilty to drink-driving and making unnecessary noise or smoke.

Magistrate Graham Lee noted Pobar had a drug-driving offence in 2018, prompting him to reply: “Yeah, I swapped drugs for alcohol”.

Pobar was fined $800 and disqualified from driving for six months.
