The Grammar 150 Gala Dinner on Saturday evening, held in a marque seating 800 guests on Old Boys’ Memorial Oval, was one of the last events in a year of celebrating with the community 150 years of education and tradition.
Guests included Governor-General Sam Mostyn and the night was compared by Old Boy, former WIN News presenter, now China’s CGTN anchor Lincoln Humphries.
The Grammar Boy, a statue of a schoolboy with hand outstretched symbolising the virtues of good character, was unveiled by current headmaster Dr John Kinniburgh on Friday.
G150 project manager, Jo Capp, said everyone who attended really engaged throughout the night and embraced the history of the school.
“We had grandfathers and great-grandfathers come to the sesquicentenary,” Ms Capp said.
“We had one family that had five generations go to this school.”
TGS headmaster from 2003 to 2020, Peter Hauser, said the school had changed quite a bit from when he started.
“I’m so pleased to see the broadening of the school, the musicians have a profile and the boys are playing a variety of sports not solely rugby union,” Mr Hauser said.
“We’ve broadened and had a better outlook, I think that widening of opportunity for boys was an important one.”
Mr Hauser said he was extremely proud of his students over the years.
“Many boys have done really well with a huge national profile but there are many others who have developed into good men,” he said.
A time capsule will be sealed and interned later this month as the anniversary celebrations conclude.
