A 32-year-old Glenvale man has died after he suffered life-threatening injuries when a truck and an Isuzu D-MAX utility collided on the Gore Highway, west of Toowoomba.

Emergency services were called out to the Gore Highway north of Millmerran at 9.30am Wednesday, a Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said.

According to the initial police reports the man was attempting to overtake a vehicle and had crossed into the opposite lane when he collided head-on with a semi-trailer.

Four fire crews were on scene the Glenvale man was entrapped, the QFD spokeswoman said.

Paramedics assessed a second patient, a 32-year-man Miles man with minor injuries, and transported him in a stable condition to Toowoomba Hospital.

Police closed the Gore Highway in both directions, with a diversion put in place at Lindenmayer Rd and Charles St.

Witnesses or anyone with information is urged to contact police.

The crash comes as Darling Downs Police prepare to roll out a traffic enforcement program for the new financial year

Speaking in general about road safety over the past 12 months, Darling Downs Superintendent Doug McDonald said police were concerned about a rise in fatal crashes.

“Our region has the second highest number of fatal crashes in Queensland, more than 30 people have died on our roads in the past year,” he said.

“I recognize that we have a lot of rural roads but I am continuously seeing traffic crashes that are the result of obvious bad behavior, even in the CBD area.”

Darling Downs Police have been instructed to ramp up random breath tests in response to the spike.

“We see an over representation of people with criminal and traffic history in fatal crashes,” Supt McDonald said.

“Many times it is not necessarily them that are losing their lives.”

The Forensic Crash Unit was tasked to the Millmerran crash, and the road was closed for several hours.

Anyone with information about the crash, including dash cam footage, should phone Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
