A man has been killed in a fiery crash on a regional Queensland road north of Toowoomba two days before Christmas.
A Queensland Police spokesman said the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the two-vehicle crash that occurred near the intersection of Kingaroy-Cooyar Rd and New England Highway about 2.30pm on Monday, December 23.
“A silver Toyota RAV4 was travelling eastbound on Kingaroy-Cooyar Rd, when it sideswiped a grey Subaru Outback that was travelling in the opposite direction,” he said.
“The RAV4 continued on before crashing into a tree and rolling.
“The driver of the RAV4, a 66-year-old Torquay man sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.”
A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said five crews were called to the scene where they found one vehicle engulfed in flames.
The QFD spokesman said the crews worked to contain the fire, including a small grass fire and had it extinguished just after 3.30pm.
Motorists were urged to avoid the area as there were delays of up to several hours.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.
The fatal crash is the latest in a horror period on our roads as police continue to plead with motorists to take care this festive season.
Darling Downs Chief Inspector Danny Shaw is pleading for the community to “take it easy” on the roads and ensure they arrive at their destination.
“We want people to be able to enjoy the holiday period with their friends and family, that’s what we want, there’s nothing worse than ending up in hospital at Christmas time or worse,” he said.
