Darling Downs Health, LivingWorks to host mental health first aid workshops

Our veterans face unique mental health challenges and these workshops are aimed at helping the people closest to them identify the warning signs and behaviours that may trigger the need for early intervention.

Veterans, their friends, and family, can access free, lifesaving training with a series of suicide prevention workshops.

Held across the Darling Downs in June, the workshops will be run by Darling Downs Health and delivered by a LivingWorks safeTALK trainer.

Each session offers practical tools to help participants recognise the warning signs of suicide, have a safe conversation, and connect someone to further support.

LivingWorks trainer and veteran Hickory Smith said the training saved his life.

“That’s how powerful it is,” he said.

“Aside from some of the everyday challenges of life, the veteran community can have some unique stressors.

“It is super beneficial to have veterans, their family, friends and supports aware and alert to any warning signs in each other.

“After completing a workshop, there have been many people that have reported using the skills within days and even hours.”

While veterans are sometimes hesitant to attend, the training is accessible, empowering and life-changing.

“Please do it, for your sake and for those around you,” Mr Smith said.

“As a veteran that has experienced some of the related challenges personally and in my family, I strongly believe everyone would benefit from this training.

“What I’ve noticed from facilitating multiple workshops is that many people are doing amazing things already. They just need a little bit of structure and a few tips on how to be more effective.”

The sessions in Goondiwindi on June 10, Millmerran on June 11, Toowoomba on June 16, Kingaroy on June 17 and Chinchilla on June 18.
