A man who attacked his vulnerable girlfriend with his car while she clung to a two-year-old child and on another occasion doused her in petrol and threatened to burn could walk free next year.

Cunnamulla man Andrew Scott Jenkyn, 34, pleaded guilty to seven terrorising attacks against his now ex-partner in Toowoomba District Court on Tuesday ranging from sadistic threats on her life to physical assaults that left her bruised and struggling to breathe.

Crown prosecutor Melissa Wilson told the court Jenkyn had once threatened to slice the woman from “one end to the other” before dousing her in petrol in a jealous rage.

“Then threatening to tie her up so that she would burn with everything and burn in hell,” Judge John Allen KC said in his remarks.

On another occasion after a heated argument, the woman tried to flee the home with a two-year-old child but was stopped by Jenkyn who chased her around the yard with his ute, all while she held the child in her arms.

“She managed to reach her car but the defendant jammed her against the back of the car using the bull bar of his ute,” Ms Wilson said.

“She did have the two-year-old child in her arms when this occurred.”

While out on an errand, he again used his car to intimidate the woman, driving towards her at high speeds before slamming the brakes to stop just short of impact.

Jenkyn also admitted to strangling, beating and slapping the women on multiple occasions.

“She found it difficult to breathe, she had to gasp for air,” Ms Wilson said.

He was subject to a probation order and suspended sentence at the time of the offending.

His defence barrister Tristan Carlos, instructed by Skuse Graham Criminal Lawyers, said Jenkyn struggled with alcohol abuse; however, argued his actions were not as severe as some others seen in court.

“The strangulation, in my submission, is not the most serious example of that offending,” Mr Carlos said.

“There was no loss of consciousness, there was an accompanying assault, fortunately that did not result in any significant injuries.”

Jenkyn was formally charged with one count each of threatening violence, assault occasioning bodily harm and strangulation in a domestic setting and two counts each of common assault and dangerous operation of a vehicle with aggravating circumstances.

All offences were classified as domestic violence offences.

He was sentenced to three years and six months imprisonment and disqualified from holding or obtaining a licence for two years.

He will be eligible for parole on December 8, 2025.
