Three businesses have been left short-changed after a Toowoomba man used counterfeit cash in multiple transactions.
Toowoomba man Joel Heuer, 22, pleaded guilty before Toowoomba Magistrates Court to three counts of fraud after using three counterfeit $100 bills to pay for goods and services across South East Queensland in March and April of this year.
Victim businesses included the IGA at Walloon, BP Roadhouse in Gatton and Black and White Cabs in Brisbane, with workers noticing the counterfeit bills moments after payment.
“The (IGA) cashier called out to him but he has continued to walk back to his vehicle and leave,” Police prosecutor Acting Sergeant Chris Willson told the court.
“He has left the IGA Walloon, BP Roadhouse and Black and White Cabs out of pocket by his actions.”
In an interview several months after the incidents, Heuer told police he had been working cash jobs at the time but denied the bills he used were counterfeit.
MacDonald Law solicitor Ryan McCullough said Heuer was led astray by bad influences in his life.
“Around this time and the time of the (district court) matters he was in a very poor relationship and had been caught up in some poor behaviours,” Mr McCullough said.
“That relationship no longer continues.”
The 22-year-old was convicted of all three charges but not further punished, with the magistrate taking into account his recent conviction in the district court.
He was ordered to pay $300 in restitution to be divided equally between the victim businesses.
