Building certifier Ian David Bielby in court on $240,000 fraud charge

A Toowoomba building certifier charged with a $240,000 fraud has had his case adjourned in the city’s Magistrates Court.

Ian David Bielby was not required to be in court when his matters were mentioned in court on Monday but he was represented by his solicitor Brad Skuse.

Mr Skuse said he had received the police brief of evidence and that his client had applied for Legal Aid funding.

Mr Bielby has not as yet been required to enter pleas to the charges which include fraud – dishonestly gain benefit/advantage to the value of at least $100,000, fraud – dishonestly gain benefit/advantage to the value of over $30,000 but less than $100,000, and three counts of fraud – dishonestly gain benefit/advantage.

Police claim Mr Bielby obtained payments from a number of businesses to certify a large number of sheds, housing extensions and new builds but did not complete the work.

Toowoomba police have claim the fraud alleged amounted to more than $245,000 over a period from January 2018 to April 2021.

Magistrate Kay Ryan remanded Mr Bielby on bail and adjourned the case to November 15.
