A police raid on a storage shed uncovered a stash of more than 500 rounds of ammunition and saw a Toowoomba man hauled off a plane in Proserpine, but that wasn’t the end of the man’s troubles.

Benjimin Brett Waters faced Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to not having authority required to possess explosives, two counts of possessing dangerous drugs and obstructing police.

The court was told Waters had been on the police radar for some time, with officers executing a search warrant on a South Toowoomba storage shed on July 8 after Waters began renting it on May 12.

A search of the shed uncovered 400 rounds of .22 ammunition, 120 12 gauge shotgun shells, 17 rounds of assorted calibres of rifle ammunition and 21 blank shotgun cartridges, as well as gunpowder and cartridge filling equipment, police prosecutor Anita Page said.

After discovering that Waters had travelled north, and had last been at the storage shed on July 2, the court was told police were able to track the 36-year-old to north Queensland, and was arrested on July 9 as he was boarding an aeroplane in Proserpine.

Waters faced Proserpine Magistrates Court on July 11, and while in a police station holding cell officers noticed Waters about 1.15pm washing an unknown object before appearing to secrete an object inside himself.

“Police attended the cell and confronted (Waters) who stated he was going to the toilet, and police asked to see his hands as he had them in fists,” Ms Page said.

“He refused and police grabbed the defendant, advising him that he was going to be searched.”

After pulling away from police trying to search him police saw what appeared to be a white surgical glove with the fingers missing, before conducting a strip search which saw a cut-down syringe fall from Waters’ anus area.

The search also uncovered 4.1g of suboxone strips and 1.4g of methylamphetamine.

Waters’ solicitor Brad Skuse said his client had a “longstanding issue” with drugs, but that he had been out of trouble for a significant period of time before a relationship breakdown and work injury in 2013 saw him return to drug use.

Employed in the Blackbutt region, Mr Skuse said his client had travelled north to see his two kids when he was arrested.

Magistrate Gary Finger jailed Waters for six months, with an immediate release on parole.
