Supermarket giant Aldi will be entering the Toowoomba CBD for the first time after it was revealed as the anchor tenant for a neighbourhood shopping centre.
The largest competitor to the Coles-Woolworths duopoly will replace IGA at the Hopper Centre Shopping Village off Hume Street in Toowoomba City this year.
This will be Aldi’s fifth location in the Toowoomba region, following existing centres at Kearneys Spring, Highfields, Harlaxton and Torrington.
Centre owner Hadley Green Investment Group announced the change on Thursday, with executive director Hugh Zochling calling it a welcome shake-up.
“We are delighted that ALDI has chosen Hooper Centre as the destination for a new Toowoomba store,” he said.
“Hooper Centre has a long history spanning more than four decades of providing the best value and convenience for the every day shopping needs of the Toowoomba community.
“The arrival of ALDI will provide our local Toowoomba community with even more value and reasons to visit Hooper Centre Shopping Village.”
Aldi will join a number of longstanding tenants at the centre, including popular meat market Patton’s Bargain Butcher, Chammart, Bakers Delight and Bottlemart.
IGA will close its doors on February 28, ahead of the Aldi reopening later in the year.
