Spit, the blockbuster movie starring David Wenham and filmed at the Wellcamp quarantine facility, is set to be released in cinemas across Australia in March.

But Toowoomba film-lovers have been offered a sneak-peek, with an advanced screening to be held at the Strand Cinema on February 11.

The screening includes a Q&A session with Wenham.

The movie follows Johnny Spitieri (Spit), a small-time ex-criminal who, after 20 years on the run overseas, slips back into Australia on a false passport only to find himself locked up in an Immigration Detention Centre with a massive target on his back as old enemies come looking for him, determined to settle old scores.

As he struggles to stay one step ahead, the resourceful Spit finds new friends in detention, teaching them his version of mateship, and what it means to be truly Australian.

It is a sequel to the 2003 Australia film Getting Square.

The flick was filmed at Wellcamp in April last year, with more than 250 cast and crew members and hundreds of extras onsite.

The production was the first major use of the centre which cost about $237 million to build and run in response to the Covid pandemic.
