Aaron John Leslie Bunt, 29, and William John Currey, 32, each charged with grievous bodily harm

The two accused men were charged at the weekend with grievous bodily harm relating to the alleged assault of a 53-year-old man who died at a Ruthven St home.

Two men charged in relation to the alleged assault of 53-year-old man who died inside a Ruthven St home on Christmas Eve appeared before Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Monday.

The two accused – North Toowoomba man Aaron John Leslie Bunt, 29, and William John Currey, 32, of Oakey – remained in the watch house and were not required to be brought into court for the brief mention of their respective matters.

Both men have been charged with grievous bodily harm with Bunt also charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Police claim both men assaulted the deceased man.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Leea Trewin told the court police still had the Ruthven St residence secured as a crime scene.

Police were awaiting results of the autopsy and, depending on those results, further charges may be laid, she said.

Acting Magistrate Damian Carroll said he had been told by investigating police that the post mortem examination was to be conducted Monday morning.

Neither accused man has been required to enter any pleas to their respective charges.

No specific details of the police allegations or the deceased man’s cause of death were aired in court.

Duty lawyer Jag MacDonald, of MacDonald Law, for Bunt, asked that his client’s matters be adjourned over to Tuesday for mention back in the same court and made no application for bail.

Currey’s lawyer Hamish Chapman told the court there would be no application for bail at this stage and asked for an adjournment while police compiled a full brief of evidence on the matter.

There being no application for bail, Mr Carroll remanded Currey in custody and adjourned his matters for committal mention back in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on February 24.

Bunt was remanded in custody to appear for mention back in the same court on Tuesday.
