Fourteen months after being arrested, the cases against three people charged in connection to the alleged murder of a North Toowoomba man have reached a significant stage and can now move forward.

Aaron John Leslie Bunt, 29, and William John Currey, 32, have been held in custody since their arrest in January 2022 on a charge of murder arising from the death of 53-year-old Len Andrew Hegarty, whose body was found inside a North Toowoomba home on Christmas Eve 2021.

Debbie Jane Richards, 33, is on Supreme Court bail after being charged with being an accessory after the fact of murder arising from Mr Hegarty’s death.

Police claim Mr Hegarty died of injuries sustained in an alleged assault at the home in the days prior.

Neither Mr Bunt or Mr Currey were required to be in Toowoomba Magistrates Court when their respective cases were mentioned on Thursday.

Aaron John Leslie Bunt and William John Currey have been charged with the murder of 53-year-old Len Andrew Hegarty, while Debbie Jane Richards has been charged with accessory after the fact to murder and one count of fraud.

Mr Bunt’s solicitor Ryan McCullough, of MacDonald Law, told the court he had received the autopsy report and barrister Steve Kissick had been briefed in the matter and asked for an adjournment.

Solicitor Joe Millican, for Mr Currey, asked for an adjournment to the same date.

Solicitor Nathan Bouchier, of Bouchier Khan Lawyers, appeared in court representing Ms Richards, 33, and said he too had received the autopsy report and that barrister David Jones was briefed with a conference booked to speak with their client next week.

Mr Bouchier said it was envisaged after that conference a submission would be sent to the prosecution regarding their client’s case.

None of the three have as yet been required to enter any pleas to their respective charges.

Magistrate Clare Kelly therefore remanded Mr Bunt and Mr Leslie in custody and adjourned their respective cases to April 4 in the same court while Ms Richards, who is on Supreme Court bail, was remanded on bail to the same date.
