Toowoomba 'vote no' campaigner doused with liquid, abused

A TOOWOOMBA 'vote no' campaigner writes into The Chronicle to detail an attack during his campaigning efforts in the city.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: WHILE standing on Ruthven St last week as a Coalition for Marriage volunteer and holding up a "You can say no" banner, old mate pulled over to the curb and doused me with an unknown liquid through his open window, along with a mouthful of "unprintables", before driving on a bit further, alighting from his vehicle and throwing our free-standing "vote no" sign on to the adjacent grass verge.

He then sped off (after I had "hobbled" onto the road to note his rego number).

I had wrenched my knee in trying to take evasive action to avoid the oncoming liquid and am still on "11/2 legs".

The immediate consequence of this assault is a painful knee and an even greater determination by myself and others to continue to work/fight for the maintenance of marriage and its consequent social, legal and educational norms in our country, Australia, as a union between one man (male) and one woman (female).

I'm wondering if this (hopefully isolated) incident is an indication of the way the "Yes" people' will play the game with regard to the raft of new legislations that would need to be enacted in our federal parliament if the "Yes" vote is successful?

Is this country soon to move to new ways of determining the social and moral direction of our nation?
