From Beverly Hills to Napoli, Salt Lake City to Dubai, the Real Housewives franchise has conquered 11 American cities and 19 international spin-offs — and now, it’s coming for the Gold Coast.
But this isn’t Bravo’s next reality TV instalment.
The (Un) Real Housewives of the Gold Coast, a new comedy musical, is making its debut at HOTA this Friday, packing 60 minutes of flying drinks, smashed wine glasses, and snatched weaves to the local stage.
Writer and producer Trent Owers says the show blends local satire with “classic Housewives drama”, and the audience isn’t just watching — they’re in the episode.
“It’s a fictional story about a reunion episode if the Gold Coast had a Real Housewives,” he says.
“The audience watching our show is actually the live audience watching the taping of the reunion. It’s quite meta in that way.”
And there’s no shortage of Gold Coast references — from Light Rail Stage Four to the Burleigh Pavilion.
“Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is where our big fight of the season actually happens, which is what we call the Galah Gala.”
With Real Housewives having built a cult following over the past two decades, long-time viewers will also recognise winks to iconic moments from across the franchise.
“I sent the cast a full bible — I was like, ‘here’s a link to this fight, that’s what this fight is based off’,” Owers said.
One scene references the infamous “Let’s not talk about the husband” Amsterdam meltdown from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, wine-throwing and all.
“The way we did it … we’ve made it even more camp,” Owers said.
But there’s new drama too, including a plot line involving a housewife who subscribes to her own son’s OnlyFans, while another is gunning for Mayor.
“It can be as silly as it wants because it might even be real, who knows,” he jokes.
While Owers insists none of the housewives are based on real Gold Coasters, he says the setting feels natural and if Bravo came knocking he’d be all in.
“It feels so right to have Gold Coast Housewives – I feel like it fits the brand”.
The (Un) Real Housewives of the Gold Coast opens Friday June 27 at HOTA.
