THE latest salvo in Sydney’s casino wars has been fired with The Star unveiling its opulent new $250 million high-roller area.
The Pyrmont casino is preparing to re-open after a three-month lockdown on Wednesday, with the new Sovereign Room welcoming cashed-up punters from Friday.
The Star’s new high-roller area has been five years in the planning and is seen as the key to countering Crown Sydney when it opens its VIP- tables-only casino to punting whales across the water at Barangaroo at the end of the year.

“It‘s a competitive industry right across the Asia Pacific region and you need to invest to deliver world-class assets,” The Star’s chief executive Matt Bekier said.
The new Sovereign area is bigger than an NRL field, has a sunken bar with five-metre tall floor-to-ceiling harbour view windows and was built using 245 tonnes of marble.
When Sovereign is at full capacity it will serve 400kg of lobster and 2000 abalone a month from live seafood tanks to high-end punters who can bet anywhere between $300 and $100,000 a hand.
