A male games dealer at The Star has been sacked after he was captured on CCTV throwing away a bag of drugs. Another staffer was also fired for gambling while on duty.

Two staff from The Star have been banned from entering a casino for five years after being caught gambling and allegedly possessing illegal drugs.

Both staff had been responsible for overseeing gaming at the casino when they were sacked for serious misconduct.

In the first incident, a male games dealer was off-duty when he was seen with a bag of white powder.

The man, who had been standing on the City View Balcony with another person, was captured throwing the bag over the railing behind him.

The bag was later found behind some plants in a public area within the casino’s boundaries after security searched the area.

According to Liquor & Gaming NSW, the games dealer would not disclose where the substance came from when interviewed by The Star, only that he had “found” it in his pocket and wanted to dispose of it.

The man was later charged with possessing a prohibited drug.

In a separate incident, a female gaming attendant placed 28 bets on a gambling app while on duty.

The woman, who admitted to having a gambling problem, had worked at The Star for 11 years.

Liquor & Gaming NSW said she had admitted to frequently placing bets on her phone during work hours in January and February this year.

The bag of white powder is collected by casino security guards.

Security guards secured the drugs in a clear, plastic bag.

The independent Liquor & Gaming Authority made the decision to ban the casino employees from working at or entering a casino premises after The Star alerted Liquor & Gaming NSW to having fired them for offences in breach of their responsibilities as gaming licensees.

Liquor & Gaming is working with the NSW Police Casino and Racing Unit in relation to the matters.

Authority Chair Philip Crawford said The Star self-reported the misconduct in line with their obligations and was right to sack its employees as they held special positions of responsibility in the industry.

“A casino special employee is a licensee engaged to supervise and facilitate gaming activities,” he said.

“These people help safeguard the integrity of casino operations from criminal influence, serious misconduct or exploitation and a special degree of trust is placed in them.”

A spokesman from The Star said the casino worked closely with the regulator and other authorities, including law enforcement.

“These incidents were identified by The Star and dealt with at the time,” he said.
