It’s only November but the Northern Pride already has two issues with its roster.
There are three genuine halves in Jack Campagnolo, Burleigh recruit Matt Egan and Evan Child, and while the club might be confident in their ability there’s no depth beyond that trio.
There’s also a major absence in the front row after George Fai backflipped on his deal to play for the Pride, instead opting for the 15-man code. The forward pack looked good with him in, but take him out and there’s some considerable space.
Coach Ty Williams isn’t too concerned yet. He told media on Tuesday the club would wait to see what happened at the Cowboys before making moves.
Hang on.
PRIDE WAIT ON COWBOYS TO ADD FINAL PIECES TO ROSTER
A month ago, Williams told media the club hadn’t considered what it would get from the Cowboys.
“It’s the first time, as a club, we’ve gone around and recruited without even thinking about Cowboys allocations,” he said then.
This situation is slightly unique given the Cowboys are in the mix should Valentine Holmes return to the NRL after his stint with NFL’s New York Jets ends.
That won’t be confirmed until his NFL contract ends at the end of the year, but it leaves the Pride in limbo.
They can’t afford to linger there. This team lacked scoring ability and need a solid halves pairing to address it so they can improve on their 12th-placed finish.
Jake Clifford could return should Holmes sign with the Cowboys, but fans need more to look forward to after a tough season.
