More than 34,000 “baby bundles” have been handed out since the start of the year with the NSW government saying the goodie bags have been a massive hit with new mums.

The hampers — which contain essential items like change mats and a sleeping bag — are worth $300 and are designed to take some of the financial pressure off parents.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian revealed 34,175 baby bundles have been distributed across NSW, including 1156 at Liverpool Hospital alone, since January 1.

“(It’s) proving to be a huge hit … we’re really pleased with the feedback we’re getting from new parents and new families to say how useful it is for them,” she said.

“That baby bundle is there to support all your needs whether it’s information, things you’ve forgotten to pick up or whether it’s making sure that the first few days of life are that much easier.”

Ms Berejiklian and Holsworthy MP Melanie Gibbons personally delivered one of the hampers to Rose Raketic, 27, on Sunday who received her own bundle of joy on Friday.

Baby Isidora arrived at Liverpool Hospital weighing a healthy 3.8kg — slightly above the average birth weight for Australian babies which is 3.3kg.

“(The bundle) is very useful, there’s lots of things you need,” Ms Raketic said.

“The play mat is great, and baby books too. I haven’t had time to buy those things.

“I will definitely be using everything.”

The bundles also include a wrap, bath and room thermometers, hand sanitiser, barrier cream and resources on child development and parental wellbeing.

Parents receive them before being discharged from hospital or after registering their child with NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages if the baby is not born at a hospital.

The hampers form part of a $157 million parenting package that also includes funding for midwives, post-natal home visits and research into childhood cancer and other genetic disorders.
