Tennant Creek man charged for alleged assault on boy, possession of firearm and cannabis

A Tennant Creek man who allegedly assaulted a boy and was in possession of an illegal firearm and commercial quantity of drugs has been charged.

A 53-year-old Tennant Creek man who allegedly assaulted a boy and was in possession of an illegal firearm and commercial quantity of drugs has been charged with multiple offences by police.

The man was arrested by NT Police on Wednesday after a traffic apprehension, and was arrested in relation to two alleged assaults on a 12-year-old boy.

A search of the man’s vehicle allegedly resulted in the seizure of cannabis and cash.

Tennant Creek detectives and general duties officers later searched the man’s residence, allegedly locating a commercial quantity of cannabis, a rifle and a large quantity of cash.

Southern Watch Commander Marc Watson said the total amount of cannabis seized was more than one kilogram, and cash totalled just under $10,000.

Further investigation by police revealed the man was not licensed to own a firearm.

The man has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of choking and strangulation, one count of possession, one count of supplying a commercial quantity of cannabis, three firearms offences and one count of obtaining property from the commission of an offence.

The man was refused bail and will appear in Tennant Creek local court on Friday.
