An East Coast woman has faced court, charged with the common assault of a three-month baby.

Emma Kate Woolnough, 36, appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday, entering a plea of not guilty through her lawyer Cameron Scott.

Ms Woolnough, who is on bail, will return to court on August 8.

Tasmania Police previously said it laid the charge on April 15 this year, following an alleged incident at a Triabunna address.

In a statement, police said emergency services were called to the home about 2am after a “portable cot had allegedly been flipped, resulting in minor injuries to the child”.

The baby was conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a stable condition, and later discharged.

It is alleged Ms Woolnough wasn’t known to the baby, but was an associate “of another person present”.

A woman previously told the Mercury the alleged incident occurred during a house-warming party.
