A $23m redevelopment at one of Tasmania’s biggest high schools will begin in earnest next year with construction tenders released.

The project at Hobart City High School will provide contemporary facilities for students and staff at the school’s New Town campus.

About $1.5m has already been spent on early enabling works at the campus.

After years of discussions, two former single sex schools, Ogilvie High for girls and New Town High for boys, amalgamated over two campuses in 2022.

The New Town campus dates back to 1919 when it first opened and was known as the Hobart Junior Technical School.

Education Minister Jo Palmer said the project would include flexible learning spaces for increased student engagement and wellbeing.

“This redevelopment has been shaped by extensive consultation with students, staff, and the broader community,” she said.

“Our government is committed to delivering the education facilities our students deserve and we will continue to upgrade education facilities across the State.”

The tenders for the redevelopment, advertised on Saturday, close at 2pm on December 11.

Construction work at the school is expected to start early next year and be completed in 2026.

Hobart City High has about 1200 students.

Ms Palmer said the Hobart City High School redevelopment was part of the government’s record investment in new education infrastructure across the State.

The concept plans and digital renders are available at the Department for Education, Children and Young People’s website.
