A federal election scorecard has been issued for candidates in all five seats and the Senate by the Tasmanian Climate Collective, a group demanding climate action on the political agenda.

All candidates were asked 27 questions and scored on their answers from excellent, some initiative to poor.

The Australian Greens candidates in all seats and the Senate were rated excellent while in the Senate the Australian Justice Party, Sustainable Australia Party and Independent Fenalla Edwards also received a green tick.

Labor Party candidates all scored some initiative while the Liberal Party, Jacqui (Spelt Jackie on the scorecard) Lambie Network, One Nation and Trumpet of Patriots were rated poor.

Several Independent candidates, including Andrew Wilkie in Clark, Peter George in Franklin, Angela Offord in Lyons and Adam Martin in Braddon also scored excellent.

The candidates were asked about whether they supported a fossil fuel advertising ban, an end to native logging, a carbon tax and renewable energy targets.

The questions posed to each candidate also asked about moving away from petrol, diesel, gas and coal and ending native forest logging, as directed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as among the best ways to combat the effects of climate change.

The TCC also asked about providing subsidies for household electrification, as well as household insurance support as it said insurance for fire and floods “becomes increasingly out of reach for most Australians”.

Scientist and TCC member, Sharee McCammon said while climate change was not being talked about as a major campaign issue it had had “very serious effects on how we live”.

“Australians are already seeing climate impacts in increasing food prices and skyrocketing insurance bills,” she said.

“And delays in the shift to cheap, clean renewables are making our energy costs more expensive.”

Humanities student, Kai Harrison, 23, said he was deeply worried for his future and that of his friends.

“We know that the effects of climate change really matters to people, so we are doing the work to help voters know which candidate or party is taking this important issue seriously and who is not,” he said.

The TCC says the vast majority of Australian households are already impacted by climate change.

“Climate pollution from the burning of coal, oil and gas is fuelling increasingly severe bushfires, floods, heatwaves and destructive storms,” it said.

“As a result, the overwhelming majority, 84 per cent of Australians report being directly affected by at least one climate-fuelled disaster since 2019.

“Business as usual on a planet that desperately needs action to mitigate climate change is not acceptable.”
