The faces of Queensland's shocking road toll

A popular alternative to the Southern Outlet is set to close for a month as the Hobart City Council undertakes vital safety upgrades to the notorious road.

The council will start work on $850k worth of upgrades to Proctors Rd from Tuesday, January 3.

Over the past five years, there have been 48 crashes reported on the road, which runs adjacent to the outlet, with most incidents resulting in vehicle damage.

The works are expected to be completed by Monday, February 6, when the road will reopen to traffic.

During the intervening period, Proctors Rd will be closed between Baintree Ave and the Southern Outlet turn-off. Access to Baintree Ave, however, will remain open.

“Proctors Rd is a vital link to the Mount Nelson and Tolmans Hill communities, and an important alternative to the Southern Outlet,” acting Hobart City Council CEO Neil Noye said.

“These upgrades will ensure Proctors Rd keeps our communities connected, and that road users have a much safer and smoother journey.”

The works will include the installation of a rockfall fence to prevent large rocks from falling onto the road and causing traffic hazards, new line markings to better indicate the road edge, an improved guardrail separating motorists from a steep embankment, and fixes to surface defects on the road.

The road will also be resurfaced from above Baintree Ave to the Southern Outlet turn-off.

Mr Noye said crash data had emphasised the importance of the safety upgrades, which have been timed to coincide with the school holidays so as to minimise disruptions.

The council has co-ordinated with the State Growth Department to ensure the upgrades won’t clash with any other planned works on the Southern Outlet.

The project is anticipated to deliver significant improvements to safety and driving conditions on the road, while also ensuring its long-term integrity, the council said.
