Earlier, 10am Saturday May 7: “It’s just awful”, a neighbour of a man who died at Howrah says.

The woman said she had been walking her dogs and returned to her Allumba St home in Howrah about 11 o’clock on Friday morning.

“I’d heard the sirens and there were ambulances and police outside,” she said.

“Police asked if I’d heard anything untoward earlier but I hadn’t heard anything and I wouldn’t have with the thunderstorm.”

Neighbours said the 74-year-old man was quiet and kept to himself and was believed to be unwell.

He had lived at the unit which fronts the street for more than eight years.

“He was pretty quiet but often sat out the front and would say hello if you went past,” one neighbour said.

Police and emergency services were called to the unit and when they arrived they found a man “deceased with a wound to his chest”.

A 38 year old Howrah man is in custody and helping police with their inquiries.
