Plans have been revealed for a ‘world class’ 5-star hotel in Launceston, and it’s a development expected to support increasing tourist numbers as the northern city hosts more AFL games.
The 190-room hotel is proposed for 41-55 Paterson St, which is currently being used as a car park.
An “iconic international hotel partner” will be announced at a later date.
Creative Property Holdings managing director Chris Billing said the hotel would be a ‘game-changer’ for Launceston.
“Over the past seven years, Launceston has significantly trailed behind Hobart in terms of new high-quality hotel rooms, adding only one-fifth of the new rooms that Hobart has introduced,” he said.
“With major events set to grow, including more AFL and VFL content, it’s important Launceston has the accommodation and choice of designer amenity, to meet the demand.
“As born and raised members of the Launceston community, we are passionate about transforming the city into a more vibrant visitor, education and business hub to facilitate economic growth and diversified job opportunities for local residents.”
Tasmanian Hospitality Association chief executive Steve Old said Launceston needed world class offerings, as its reputation as a tourist destination continued to grow.
“The profile of the city has increased significantly in recent years, thanks in part to being named as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in November 2021, making it one of only 36 cities worldwide bestowed with the title,” he said.
“And with a host of drawcard events such as Festivale, BeerFest, AgriCULTURED and quality AFL fixtures, we need to be able to appeal to every demographic of visitors.”
