Some special Tasmanians will get an extra leg up on the cost-of-living through a new fuel discount initiative launched between RSL Tasmania and United Petroleum.

“It’s an incredible opportunity to be supported as a veteran, but also to know that funds are going back into the services that other veterans in the state desperately need,” veteran and RSL Tasmania member Amelia Hagger said.

The new statewide partnership, announced on Wednesday, means RSL Tasmania’s Service, Life and Affiliate members can receive a 4c per litre discount at United and Astron service stations, with 1c per litre of fuel purchased using a United Fuel app going back to RSL Tasmania’s Veteran Services as delivered through VeteranHub.

In a special promotion, RSL Tasmania members can also receive a double fuel discount of 8c per litre on Anzac Day only.

After getting injured while serving and having to move from full-time to part-time service, Ms Hagger said cost-of-living was front of mind for her and was grateful for the discount.

“I think there are a lot of people struggling with that at the moment, but I know there are a lot of Tasmanian veterans who do struggle with bringing in income and keeping on top of bills and growing costs,” she said.

“That’s why this initiative is great in that it gives support directly to veterans in two ways – first through the fuel discount and then in giving back to programs that assist veterans.”

RSL Tasmania CEO John Hardy said this was one of the first ever funding supports from a “major institution”.

“This is a support for veterans in the sense that our members will receive a discount when they come to United Fuel, which is excellent,” he said.

“We went to United and we asked for some support and not only did they give support to our members, they gave ongoing support to our veteran services, which is VeteranHub.

“That will go towards supporting a bill of about $2.4m a year.”

United Petroleum’s Head of Loyalty Judith Russell said the company had a “soft spot” for veterans and the RSL community, making it an easy agreement to make.

It comes after the RACT said it would not renew its partnership contract with the fuel giant following penalties being handed down by the Fair Work Ombudsman.

“We are proud to be the first major contributor to the RSL and are proud to support veterans at every one of our petrol pumps,” she said.

Members can use the discount once a day on up to 150L of fuel and excludes self-service United and Astron locations using an outdoor payment terminal.
