Tasmania’s own Princess Mary of Denmark and Crown Prince hubby Frederik may be in for awkward viewing when the Matildas take on the Danes in next week’s huge FIFA World Cup game, with the winner scoring a spot in the quarter-finals.
The Matildas will go toe-to-toe against Denmark at Stadium Australia in Sydney next Monday night after the latter team finished second in Group D following a 2-0 win over Haiti in Perth on Tuesday evening.
The match on Monday marks the second occasion the two teams have faced off in less than one year, with the Matildas beating Denmark 3-1 in Viborg in October last year.
Forward Caitlin Foord scored twice and midfielder Katrina Gorry also found the back of the net for the victors.
Denmark is ranked 13th in the world, three places behind Australia, but will deploy secret weapon and Sam Kerr’s former Chelsea teammate Pernille Harder.
One wonders if the Princess and the Prince will bet on the loser doing the dishes?
The Danish Royals have previously been spotted at men’s Australia V Denmark World Cup games, pictured below in their gear for a 2022 game, with Australia taking out the match.
On whether the Royals would be making a mad dash to Sydney to watch the game in person, the Mercury has contacted The Royal House of Denmark’s Communications Department for comment.
